Today there exists many different models of metal detectors for sale. Since metal detectors all appear basically the same, they should all perform in a similar way, right? Wrong!

Every model will be produced with a specialized usage in mind.  But how are you supposed to choose the right detector?  The range of options is particularly puzzling if you are not experienced!  

To make sure you avoid squandering your hard-earned money on a metal detector that fails to work as you expected you need to ask yourself the following 3 simple factors:

What are you hunting after?
Each metal detector will operate better at specific tasks than others.  For instance, although you may use a gold metal detector to also seek for coins (and vice versa), you will have far more results by using a detector that has been especially manufactured for that use.  The first step is to ask yourself what is the main purpose or target.

Is your planned goal detecting coins and jewelry?  You should buy a model that comes with discrimination. Do you want to be hunting after historical artifacts or war relics?  You need to get a metal detector with excellent depth and larger searchcoils. Have you got gold fever, and desire a detector to find gold nuggets? A metal detector that has ground balancing is important.

What is the ground like?
Individual metal detectors respond differently according to the type of ground.  Will you detect in demanding environments like saltwater beaches or heavily mineralized ground?  Such conditions often cause some detectors to go nuts and beep uncontrollably.  So be sure to get one designed for that ground condition.

Will you be detecting shipwrecks? Many metal detectors have waterproof coils (the disc that points at the ground) but their housings and electronics aren't waterproof unless specifically stated.  So if you want to be detecting undersea treasure you want to go for a specially-designed detector.

What is your budget?
After you have decided your main usage and locations you can shortlist the metal detectors for sale that meet those requirements.  Then, just go through the shortlist to find the detector that suits your budget.  Once more, this should be the last step because until you realize your goals it is impossible to select the best metal detector.

So you can now avoid wasting your cash by selecting the right metal detector for the task.  When considering metal detectors for sale you simply want to think about what your goal is, the environment you want to detect on, and the price of the detector.

IF the us goes into hyperinflation, I heard that gold and silver would skyrocket in price. To preserve your wealth is where it should be mostly in gold then silver if gold prices becomes too high. Gold is considered as money, so if bread is $ 200 in stores, couldn't I sell some of my gold/silver to buy it? Granted that the precious metal prices are high, like one ounce of gold is $ 5000.00? I find it confusing if i'm going to buy metals to hedge against the us dollar, shouldn't I be able to use it if I need to buy things, like food, pay mortgage, property taxes? How are metals beneficial during hyperinflation?

Until the 1930's $ could be exchanged for gold so the hyperinflation during WWI had no effect on the price in $ , However the inflation adjusted price of precious metals other than gold and silver as well as gem stones has always gone up with inflation and then falls as inflation subsides, and since we abandoned the gold standard gold and silver behaves the same way. In fact just fear of inflation will effect the price, it does not actually have to occur because many people think like you. see price chart since 1791 here

Moscow State Circus

Went to the circus tonight. After 10 minutes it became the best night out you ever had. Amazing, extraordinary, physical, beautiful, genuinely scary. Just awesome.

But the first 10 minutes ... cheezy synth music, a 5 minute monologue about the birth of the Soviet Union (no I am not kidding), then a 'dance routine' that seemed to have not only been choreographed by a tortoise or possibly a sloth, but seemed to be executed by the 'dont give a bugger' rejects from the Glee club. They didn't even ring in the performance, they barely showed up - walked through it, were many seconds out of sync with each other. It was truly terrible. Our hearts filled with a) dread b) that was a waste of £26 each c) err - isn't this supposed to be the best circus on the planet??

Then the circus stuff started.

And it became clear that the dancers were actually amazing circus performers being forced into a dance as part of the evening's entertainment. And maybe the dance is a nice warm-up.

Oh my word these guys are good. Decades of training and pain and striving for perfection, and it is dazzling to behold. Also, I have to add - the girls are not only talented beyond description, but they are beautiful beyond words. Phew.

Standouts for me - the guys with the most awesome physiques you ever saw, proper, chiselled, superhero V-shaped torsos honed not from pointless press-ups and gym work but from goal-directed exercises and training, a body deliberately engineered to be able to DO STUFF to an outrageous and often unbelievable level of skill. Manouvering around from standing to sitting to squatting, with a 15 foot metal pole sitting on their heads, otherwise unsecured, with a girl of breathtaking gorgeousity atop the pole. How do you do that? The centre of gravity of the whole system is about 8 feet over their heads, the system is idiotically unstable - but they just glide and twist, and at one point even leap to a squatting position - with a pole and a girl on their heads. Nobody dies. And the metal poles are way long enough to fall into the crowd and take out the first row. Effing amazing. Then the jugglers - warp factor 4 juggling, mirrored clubs, dazzling lights, insane kinetic energies and rotational energies being transferred between 3 performers. Then they got onto a big old thing with arms 20 feet wide and it started rotating, fast - they were having to throw into the direction of motion and compensate for the weird rotating inertial frame they were in. Literally dazzling. Then the flying act - aerial slow dances with bungee ropes, with explosive Superman lift-offs, Cirque du Soleil rotating drops but with bungee cords instead of silks, so they BOUNCE at the extremes of motion. Silky smooth, such grace and quite beautiful, and then you gasp at the explosion of energy as they lift off. Oh, then the guys with the metal poles came back and did their act again - on a FRIKKIN' HIGH WIRE. Jesus. I watched the entire routine through a crack in my fingers, hands over my face and over my mouth, heart fluttering. I was genuinely scared for them. The girls on top of the pole on top of the guy had a safety wire, but the guys holding them didn't. My inner voice kept saying 'Oh My God. Oh My God. Oh My God. Oh My God' so loudly my lips were moving - this went on for a while, but the inner voice was answered and for the second time today, against the odds, nobody died. And then came the tumblers. Tumbling with ferocious velocity (velocity is key to the awe being inspired I feel) and incredibly short run-ups and only 6 feet from the landing point to the first row. Balls the size of Pluto ... and an awesome spectacle.

Gasp.

I've missed out at least 3 acts of equal talent and dazzletasticity. Plus the clowns were funny.

The fact that a half-full house greeted such a display of skill and entertainment breaks my heart.

Note on the clowns - eventually they were funny - initially they were just dull (to my sensibilities), but the Russians behind us were pi**ing themselves. The tent was *full* of Russians. And the staff refused to address them in Russian (which was very disciplined), they just pointed them at their seats in heavily-accented English.

I cannot recommend this highly enough as an evening out. But don't take any stimulants before you go, your heart will stop.

The difference in afternoon and evening temperature climbs and the trees change from green to red and yellow. The most beautiful example of this change can be found in the maple. Japan is filled with maple trees and Japanese flock from all over to view then during the fall tourist season. In Japan, autumn leaf viewing is called, "Momiji-gari". This practice has a long history, having been enjoyed by noble families twelve-hundred years ago in the Heian Period. The colors and brilliance of the leaves changes from year to year, with rainfall and especially temperature influencing their hue. Years before, I stood frozen before this very door. Was locked out of my undergrad dorm. Had lost my pass, again. The night before, I had met some fantastic girl from Connecticut with magic in her eyes and a dangerous propensity for debate.

Here lived a younger me, with little more than denim in his closet. He passed through this door daily, reciting an obscure French poem, while riding a bike to the boat house through the dark blue light of dawn. He cruised confidently through the naieve, brick-and-cobblestone academic world of ideas. He was verbose, opinionated, egocentric, and inflexible. Younger me was not so good at waiting or listening, but a voracious reader in constant motion who could run like the wind. And make you smile; laugh tickle you kiss you charm you convince you. To believe.

What shall I tell him? Not to take so many chances? To stay safely on the other side of this door, with his nose buried in the safety of books? To keep his outlandish dreams to himself? To skip Paris altogether, and go straight to business school? Not to bother returning to Barcelona; that the Spaniard's moved on? To open his heart for once. And reveal the terrible truth to that beautiful and honest mixed media artist he had to sneak in the back door? For in the end, she was no embarassment you fool! That dirt poor soul from Somerville with no matching coffee cups is "the one that got away", the one light for whom your lonely heart will forever long and long!!!

Then again, how could I NOT forgive him for buying that one-way ticket to London only to end up ringing a stranger's doorbell, apologizing loudly to an empty porch, drinking the entire plastic bottle of wine himself, and sleeping in the bus station??

How could I not want to save him, from the regrets that haunt us all--and ever after? Who among us wouldn't reach back to rescue a younger self from the inevitable pain, from the worldly consequences of a vulnerable smile? Yet, who among us wouldn't be tempted to trade. The cynical wisdom of our rich experience for the relentless optimism of a young and wild wild heart?!

I'm through the doorway now, reflecting on the man I used to be. And I am smiling, warmed by the forgiveness of lessons learned. I'm a better man for the experience...my mind is more open; my spirit more humble. And I am ready for the next phase in the evolution of me: bring it on!
